Over our years of collaborative research, we have observed the various challenges people face as they embark on research projects. These include how to frame up a research project, right through to how they can clearly articulate their work. New researchers are often confused about the difference(s) between various research approaches and methodologies. METHOD is a resource written for students, researchers and practitioners that presents a research framework to support the early development of research and helps researchers confidently present outcomes so they can be better understood and valued.

METHOD was built on research undertaken by two design-led research labs, one in the United Kingdom (Lab4Living) and the other in New Zealand (Good Health Design), who have dedicated the last two decades to building an understanding of the role that design research might play in the broader context of health and wellbeing.
We recognised that for researchers whose work sits at the intersection between design and health, it is sometimes tricky to properly articulate the value and contribution of our research to those who might confuse the difference(s) between what is design and what is design research.
We created METHOD to serve as a framework to structure the way we talk about our research and communicate its value and contribution to others. While it was informed by our experiences working in Design for Health, the framework is applicable to any research. To help demonstrate the framework, we applied it to six case studies based on projects conducted by both labs.
